Construction Industry Gets OSHA Ruling on Confined Spaces

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued its final ruling on confined spaces on May 4, which should provide much needed protection for those who work in those spaces.
Roughly two decades in the making, the new rule is designed to keep workers safe from exposure to hazards in confined spaces, such as tanks, manholes, pits, crawl spaces, and air ducts. It is scheduled to go into effect on August 3, 2015.

Workers’ Memorial Day Events Planned Throughout Ohio

Events are planned throughout the state of Ohio on April 28 for Workers’ Memorial Day, an event held annually to remember workers killed on the jobsite.
In addition to honoring workers who lost their lives, the day also serves as a reminder that workers throughout the country are still fighting for improved safety on the jobsite, including better safety standards and tougher safety code enforcement. The date of April 28 is used to commemorate the 1971 establishment of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which is responsible for setting and enforcing workplace safety standards.

CBCTC and Cleveland Schools Partner to Give Students Career Opportunities

The Cleveland Building and Construction Trades unions are teaming up with Cleveland Schools to help attract current high school students to careers in the construction industry.
An agreement signed by the Cleveland Building & Construction Trades Council (CBCTC), the City of Cleveland, and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District will give students at Max Hayes High School a chance to enroll in a state-approved pre-apprenticeship program during high school. The curriculum, which will be taught by the JATCs and their members, will be focused on individual trades so students can meet union standards. Upon graduation, students will have the opportunity to become apprentices and join the construction trades.

President Obama Backs Unions, NLRB with Veto

President Barack Obama vetoed a joint resolution that would have overturned a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) rule to modernize representation-case procedures.
The legislation, if not vetoed, would have made it harder for working Americans to join unions.
“One of the freedoms of folks here in the United States is that if they choose to join a union, they should be able to do so,” Obama said at the White House when announcing the veto. “And we shouldn’t be making it impossible for that to happen.”

The Irish American Archives Society (IAAS) bestowed one of their highest honors to Cleveland Building & Construction Trades Council President Terence P. Joyce on February 25.
President Joyce, who is also the Business Manager of Laborers Local 310, was honored for his contributions to the local Irish community when he received the Annual Walk of Life Award from the IAAS.
