Toledo Building Trades Help Open Glass City Dog Park

After years of tireless campaigning, the new Glass City Dog Park is finally set to open this weekend in South Toledo due to some much-needed assistance from several Toledo area building trades. 

The membership-based canine playground uses 4.4 acres of city-owned property in Woodsdale Park and will be operated by Toledo Unleashed, an area nonprofit whose mission is “to foster and promote off-leash opportunities for dogs in the greater Toledo area.”

Central Ohio contractor pleads guilty to hiring undocumented workers

A central Ohio construction contractor pleaded guilty Aug. 28 to employing undocumented workers and inducing them to enter the U.S. illegally.

According to media reports, Jennifer Quintana pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio on behalf of her construction company, Quintana Construction, to one felony count of hiring undocumented workers. Quintana also personally pleaded guilty to one count of willingly failing to file a federal tax return for nonemployee wages, a misdemeanor violation.

Sheet Metal Workers volunteer free time for neighborhood clean-up project

About 20 members of Sheet Metal Workers Local 24 volunteered their free time to participate in a neighborhood clean-up project that was part of the Columbus Volunteer Challenge. Working with Keep Columbus Beautiful on Sept. 6, the members of Local 24 picked up more than 20 bags of litter from an area of Parsons Avenue.

The Columbus Volunteer Challenge is an annual city-wide volunteer event hosted by United Way of Central Ohio, HandsOn Central Ohio, and the City of Columbus. This was the first year that members of Local 24 participated.

U.S. Dept. of Labor cites roofing contractors for wage violations

As many as 60 workers employed by three different roofing contractors were not paid proper wages or benefits totaling nearly $85,000 for roof replacement work on a U.S. Post Office building in Columbus, according to a U.S. Department of Labor investigation.

The United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers Local 86 in Columbus worked in conjunction with ACT Ohio to conduct the initial investigation, sparked by tips that the roofing contractors were not following proper federal wage guidelines outlined in the Davis-Bacon Act.

Toledo city pool open thanks to volunteer work by local unions

Members of two labor unions received accolades June 17 from Toledo city officials for the critical role they played in getting Wilson Pool in North Toledo ready for use this summer.

Funding shortages had threatened to keep the city pool closed, but members of Laborers Local 500, the United Association (Plumbers and Steamfitters) Local 50 and Plasterers and Cement Masons Local 886 volunteered their services and helped obtain needed equipment and materials to get the pool ready for use this summer.

Senate Bill 351 would require roofing contractor licensing

State Senator Tom Patton, R-24, has proposed a bill to require all roofing contractors working in Ohio to have a license.
Senate Bill 351 was introduced July 3. If approved, it would add roofing contractors to existing laws that oversee and govern “specialty contractors,” which currently includes HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, plumbing and hydronics contractors.

DOL Roundtable focuses on growing construction apprenticeship programs

The U.S. Department of Labor recently hosted a roundtable discussion that focused on ways to attract more young workers to construction industry apprenticeships.
“There are tremendous opportunities across America for people to get into apprenticeship programs that provide pathways to the middle class and provide businesses with the opportunity to invest in their critical workforce needs,” Labor Secretary Thomas Perez said at the meeting.

ACT Ohio Executive Director Matt Szollosi was recently appointed to fill a Fair Contracting position on the Board of Directors of the National Alliance for Fair Contracting (NAFC).

“Your selection reflects the commitment and dedication you have shown as a leader in the fair contracting field,” said NAFC Chairman Rocco Davis, in a letter alerting Szollosi of his appointment. “We look forward to your leadership and participation in NAFC as it continues to be one of the premier labor-management organizations in the nation.”
