Nationwide construction spending decrease during March

Construction spending during March 2013 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $856.7 billion, according to the U.S. Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce, a slight decrease (1.7%) below the $871.2 billion estimate released in February.
Overall, construction spending during the first three months of 2013 is up from last year at $181.7 billion, as compared to $173.6 billion for the same period in 2012.

UA Local 776 hosts state apprenticeship contest

The United Association of Plumbers, Pipefitters and Service Technicians held its state apprenticeship contest in Lima from April 23-25, at the office of UA Local 776 in Allen County, Ohio.
Apprentices from 15 different locals across Ohio competed for top honors in pipefitting, plumbing, welding, sprinkler fitting and HVAC service.

Akron leaders oppose Right to Work referendum

Ohio will NOT follow in the steps of its geographic neighbors, Michigan and Indiana, to become the latest Right to Work for Less state, if Summit County leaders have a say in the matter.
Both the Akron City Council and Summit County Council recently passed resolutions opposing a push by the group misleadingly named Ohioans for Workplace Freedom to get a “So Called Right to Work” proposal before voters in this year’s general election. In order to get their referendum on the November ballot, the group needs to gather at least 386,000 valid signatures.

The fate of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) hangs in the balance as the Board appointment process has become increasingly politicized over the last two presidential administrations.

On Tuesday President Obama named three nominees to the NLRB in order to fill out the five-member, bipartisan board, just three months after January’s D.C. Circuit Court decision claimed the appointments the president made during 2012 Congressional “pro-forma” sessions were unconstitutional.

Gov. Kasich and Ohio Legislators took a critical step toward addressing the state’s transportation budget deficit this week.
Surrounded by a small gathering of state legislators Monday, Kasich signed a two-year, $7.6 billion transportation and public safety budget bill. It allocates about $4 billion in state and federal gas tax money for road and bridge work.

February 2013 Construction Spending Up Nationwide

Construction spending during February 2013 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $885.1 billion, according to the U.S. Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce, which is a slight increase (1.2%) above the $874.8 billion estimate released in January.
During the first two months of 2013, construction spending amounted to $120.1 billion, as compared to $112.6 billion for the same period in 2012.
