The 2014 Ohio gubernatorial race is already heating up as Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald (D) officially kicked off his campaign against Governor John Kasich (R) last Wednesday.
A former FBI Special Agent and Mayor of Lakewood, FitzGerald lists job creation, the protection of the middle class, and a fight against political corruption as some of the primary issues on his statewide platform. Construction contractor P.S. Construction Group has paid $212,269 in back wages to 40 employees and has been debarred by the U.S. Department of Labor from participating in federal contracts for three years for its failure to pay prevailing wages on a federally funded project.

Today, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled in a 4-3 decision that the state apportionment board’s redrawing of state legislative boundaries is constitutional.

The state apportionment board’s was heavily criticized statewide and nationally as a blatant example of political gerrymandering. In one example of alleged gerrymandering, U.S. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur 9th District stretches from Toledo to the Cleveland area.

Ohioans for Workplace Freedom has been granted the approval of the Ohio Ballot Board to begin circulating petitions to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot to make Ohio a “So Called Right to Work” state. The group will need to collect 385,253 signatures to place its measure on the ballot.
